Her hair's long and falling
Like water on her breast
Soft and softly rippling
Across shoulder robed
In pale blue cotton
And slipping into downcast eyes
As she fails at following
Her mother's advice
And can't stop staring
At the puppy curled up at her side

There's a book in her lap
Large and heavy and good and ready
To teach her ten thousand
Useful things
To learn about Biology
But her fingers skitter
Restless, they quiver
And she lays
One hand flat
Across the pages

There's a soft little paw
All orange and brown
A little puppy hand
Pressed down beside hers
And her eyes stay on it
Like an image on film
In a dark room developing
This picture
Or her and her brand new baby puppy
Pouring over school work
